Congratulations, you’re getting married…. now what? First off enjoy being engaged, enjoy drinks or dinner with your family and friends and just being in the moment, hopefully this will be your one and only engagement so enjoy it for a little while…. then it’s time to get stuck in!!
My first piece of advice is to talk to each other….. decided between the two of you what you would like your wedding to be… big, small, home or away, religious or a civil ceremony. I would also decide what money you can afford to put towards the day, and then talk to parents about if they would like to make a contribution. The outcome of your conversation and what money will be available (i.e. the budget!!!) will shape everything to come.
There are a number of timelines and check lists on the Internet and if you pick up any wedding magazine most will include one, please cut out/download and keep one as they are very helpful. They will include things you haven’t even thought of before, some will be helpful, others not so much, but it’s nice to be able to strike through the things you aren’t worried about. There is a good check list on My Wedding Checklist if you are looking for something to use. Please don’t think that you can get away without any kind of system or checklist because you can’t… there are too many things that need deciding on, researching and paying for, that if you don’t keep track you will end up in a right old pickle.
Once you have your budget, your checklist and what type of wedding you would like, it’s now onto the venue. If you are getting married in a place of worship have a think about how long you would like to travel between your ceremony and reception, you don’t want it to be a big old trek… When speaking to the venue you would like to book, my biggest tip has got to be to ask them if they have any ‘last minute’ or available dates that they want to fill, that they would do at a discount. You may find that they have had a cancellation, or they have a Sunday free later on in the year that they want to get booked, so will give you a good deal. If you don’t have your heart set on a Saturday during the summer, then being a bit flexible can save you a lot of money.
My finale piece of advice, for today’s blog post at least, is regarding your theme. Now I believe that you need to find the venue of your dreams first before deciding your theme. The venue you may have fallen in love with might already have a personality all of it’s own, so if you then try and add a theme that is big and loud they may not play well together…
